Most highbacked booster seats are pretty basic in terms of their safety and convenience features. Their main advantage over backless booster seats is that they come with a positioning guide for the shoulder belt strap and some sort of side impact protection head wings.
These head wings serve to better protect your child in the event of a collision, but they also help to keep their body in a safe position on longer journeys when they might fall asleep and slouch over sideways if they were in a backless booster seat.
But, apart from those features, there is usually little else to get excited about. A particular bug-bear of mine with these seats is that they generally offer very few recline options – usually 2 settings at most.
The Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Flex 120 Booster Seat is, however, a very different proposition. I would go so far as to say that it is in a league of its own when it comes to the sheer number of convenience, adjustment, and safety features.
I honestly don’t know of any other highbacked booster seat that has as many great features as the Primo Viaggio Flex 120.
It predecessor, the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio HBB 120 seat was good, but the Flex 120 is much better.
So, what is so great about the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Flex 120 Booster Seat?
Primo Viaggio Flex 120 – Main Features
1. Child Height & Weight Limits
The maximum child weight on the Primo Viaggio Flex 120 is very generous at 120 lbs, hence the “120” in the model name of the seat.
Although the seat is rated as suitable for use from 40 lbs and upwards, you should probably try to keep your child in a suitable harnessed seat until they are nearer the 60 – 65 lbs mark.
The maximum child height of 63 inches is significantly higher than most other highbacked booster seats, which often only go up to about 57 – 59 inches. So, although the Primo Viaggio Flex 120 seat cannot convert into a backless booster, its very generous maximum height limit means that you can safely use it for longer than most of its competitors and your child might be able to move straight from this seat to using the vehicle seatbelt rather than a backless booster seat first.
2. Rigid LATCH Installation
The Primo Viaggio Flex 120 can be installed either using the vehicle seat belt or Rigid LATCH connectors.
The European style Rigid LATCH connectors are very quick and easy to use. Unlike other LATCH systems that require strap adjustments, the Rigid LATCH connectors simply click onto the anchor points and you’re done.
You should be able to install this seat in well under a minute. When not in use, the LATCH connectors can simply be tucked back away inside the seat base so that they don’t interfere with the positioning of the seat and won’t damage your vehicle’s seat covering.
Another nice safety feature on this seat is that it comes with a blind lock attaching system, which basically means that the seat cannot accidentally be released by another passenger when they are unlocking their own seatbelt.
Before moving on from the issue of installation, another great thing about this seat is that you can install it whilst it is in the “folded-up” position. This makes it much easier to position the Rigid LATCH connectors accurately and really does speed up the installation process. Unlike other seats, you won’t have to wrestle with the highback part of the seat as you try to reach around to take hold of the LATCH connectors.
Once you’ve installed it safely in the folded-up position, you then simply flip the back up until you hear it click and you are ready to go.
3. Flexible Height, Width & Recline Adjustment
The “Flex” part of this seat’s model name is very well deserved.
Most highbacked booster seats come with only 1 or 2 recline settings and their other adjustments are limited to moving the headrest upwards and downwards according to the height of your child.
The Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Flex 120 seat can be adjusted in many more ways so that you will find it much easier to achieve the perfect fit for your child.
The seat’s “4D Total Adjust Technology” means that it can be adjusted as follows:
- 5 vertical headrest positions
- 3 vertical upper backrest positions
- 3 width adjustments for side wings
- 5 recline positions
So, you can see that this seat really can be adjusted to suit the shape of your child’s body to ensure the maximum possible comfort and protection in a collision situation.
Of the many different adjustments that can be made to this seat, the 2 that are really unique are the ability to adjust the upper backrest and the ability to alter the width of the seat.
The seat weighs 14.8 lbs, and its width can be adjusted between 17 and 20 inches.
4. Side Impact Protection & Metal Frame
In addition to the safety benefits that come from the ability to make lots of adjustments to the shape of the seat to ensure that it fits your child perfectly, there are a number of other features that improve the seat’s safety performance, including:
- Energy-absorbing foam in headrest and side wings
- Aluminium re-inforced backrest
5. Other Features
The Primo Viaggio Flex 120 also boasts:
- 2 Integrated Cup Holders
- Soft Expanded-foam Covers
- 12-year Lifespan
- Stylish Fabric Color Options
- Can be Transported in Folded-up Position
- Can be Stored in the Folded-up Position
- Made in Italy – High Quality Components

Primo Viaggio Flex 120 – My Verdict
The Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Flex 120 Booster Seat is certainly not a cheap option.
If, however, you have a generous budget and are looking for a booster seat that comes fitted with every conceivable safety and convenience feature I would strongly recommend this seat.
It is not just a great functioning seat, but I also think that it looks very stylish too.
The only downside (apart from the price) is that you cannot remove the high back part to convert it into a backless seat if your child outgrows it. So, depending upon your child’s specific needs you might need to buy a separate backless booster seat at some stage.
This is not necessarily the case though because the Primo Viaggio Flex 120 comes with a massive 63 inch maximum height limit and a 12-year lifespan. So, if you have multiple children, you could easily pass it down to young siblings in order to save money before it reaches its expiry date.
After purchasing any child car seat, you should always read the User Manual thoroughly before using it. It is also advisable to visit your local Fire Department or NHTSA Child Car Seat Inspection Centre to ensure that the seat is definitely suitable for your child’s specific requirements and that you have installed it correctly. These services are usually provided free of charge.
You can find your nearest NHTSA Centre here.
