You can’t keep a ladder in the house can you?
I have a number of smoke detectors fitted in my house. I have also thought about possible escape routes in the event that my family and I found ourselves trapped upstairs in the event of a fire.
However, one thing that I had never considered was a home fire ladder. In fact, I had no idea that such products existed. Of course, I knew that ladders existed but you can’t exactly live your life with a 15 foot ladder under your bed can you?
Sadly, this just highlights my lack of imagination. Fortunately, the fire safety specialists at “Kidde” are not so unimaginative and have come up with a very clever solution to the problem of getting out of 1st or 2nd floor windows in the event of a house fire.
There are 2 products: a 2-storey fire ladder and a 3-storey fire ladder.
The Kidde Extendable Fire Ladders
(1) Kidde KL-2S two-storey escape ladder
As you can see from the image above, this ladder comes folded up into a convenient concertina-shape which means that it can be easily stored in the bedroom and quickly unraveled in the event of a fire emergency. The obvious storage places would be under the bed or in a wardrobe.
The key features are:
- 13-foot emergency escape ladder for a 2-storey building
- Easy-to-use–attaches quickly to most windows
- Tested to 450 kg
- Durable and flame-resistant
- Tangle-free design
The ladder works as follows – move the Kidde escape ladder to the window, open and place the attachment hooks over the windowsill, pull the release strap to unfurl the ladder and climb to safety.
The ladder comes with anti-slip, zinc-plated steel rungs to prevent slipping and ensure a safe descent. They are flame resistant for increased protection and it is backed by a five-year manufacturer’s limited warranty.
You MUST measure your window sill before buying this product since it does not fit those that are wider than 11 inches.
If your window sill is suitable then this looks like a fantastic product and I am seriously considering buying one myself. I just need to make sure that it will fit my window sills first.
(2) Kidde KL-3S three storey escape ladder
This product is identical to the two storey version, apart from the fact that is extends to 25 feet instead of 13 feet.
