List Price: $199
Weight Range: 5 to 22 lbs
The Good – The 2nd lightest Infant Car Seat in America; excellent side-impact protection and air protect technology; Cosi Dozi head insert for extra comfort and protection; Multi-position sun visor and flip-out canopy; Huge range of bold fabric colors to choose from; Compatible with Maxi Cosi and Quinny strollers (can buy adaptor to fit many others too)
The Bad – Won’t last as long as other infant car seats due to the low maximum weight guideline of 22 lbs.
The Bottom Line – The Maxi Cosi Mico AP is a very popular premium infant car seat. It is especially great for parents who need a light car seat for easy and effortless transfer in and out of vehicles and strollers. A must-have seat for parents of twins and multiples and/or physical strength limitations.
Maxi Cosi Mico – Overview
The Maxi-Cosi Mico AP is a rear-facing infant car seat that is designed for babies weighing between 5 – 22 lbs and up to 29″ in height.
No Maxi-Cosi Mico Review would be complete without mentioning one of its biggest selling points – it is one of the lightest premium infant car seats on the market (8 lbs!) and, therefore, would be perfect for those who are slightly built or otherwise unable to manage the heavier alternatives. Whilst this is good news on one hand, it does mean that the car seat will not last as long as some of its competitors. For example, the Britax B-Safe can be used up to 30 lbs or 32″.
If you want to compare the Mico AP with the lightest infant seat on the US market today – you can read about the Graco SnugRide Click Connect 35 here.
I know that for many mothers weight is a very important factor. My wife suffered terribly as a result of having to carry our twins around in infant car seats that were too heavy and for her and so the Mico would have been a very good option.
Another bonus is that, unlike many similar infant car seats, the cover is machine washable (apart from the sun shade).
The Mico can be installed using the adult seatbelt without modification or the need to buy a base. However, if you want to install this car seat using LATCH connectors, you will also need to buy the Maxi-Cosi Mico Seat Base.
Since the combined weight of your child and this car seat will never exceed 65 lbs, the new car seat laws coming into effect in February 2014 will not apply.
Note: Since writing this post, Maxi Cosi have released a new 2015 version of the Mico AP and you can find out more about it here.

Peace of Mind
Maxi-Cosi have a very good reputation in manufacturing car seats with good safety features and the Mico is no exception.
It is a nicely padded seat and comes with a Cozi-Dozi infant support for extra comfort and support for smaller babies.
Another great feature that does stand out is the highly-acclaimed Superior Side Impact Performance with Air Protect® technology. This features adds much needed extra protection around your baby’s head area in the event of a collision.
Personally, the Mico Ap is not my favourite infant car seat, but if you need the lightest on the market due to physical limitation then it has no real competition.
Having said that, if you have a higher budget, you should definitely consider the new Peg Perego 4-35 Infant Car Seat – it is a little heavier than the Mico (8.8 lbs), but it is a much better seat in my opinion in terms of functionality, comfort and safety features.
Value for Money
It is approximately usually more expensive than the Britax B-Safe Infant Car Seat and you will have to decide how important seat weight is to you and your family.
The Mico is not just a little bit lighter than other infant car seats. It is actually about half the weight of the Britax B-Safe. You will have to decide for yourself whether or not this is worth the extra money.
The high price of this seat can be off-set to some extent if you use it as part of a “travel system” since it is compatible with many strollers, including Maxi-Cosi and Quinny but, then again, the Britax B-Safe can also be used with the Britax B-Series strollers.
The Maxi-Cosi Mico comes in no fewer than 14 different color schemes so you ought to be able to find one that suits your particular tastes.
