I recently bought a safety helmet for my 1-year old son and, in order to find a suitable product, I had to spend a lot of time on the internet doing research.
Whilst I have bought lots of safety helmets for my older kids over the years, they have generally been slower to develop that Felix and so, by the time they came to need one for riding their scooters, they were already passed the toddler stage.
There are quite a few good options for slightly older children (3 years plus), but what about kids as young as 12 months?
What I found was that there isn’t actually much choice out there for parents looking to buy high quality safety helmets for toddlers. Some parents might be frustrated by this but, in fact, I found this to be quite helpful since it saved me a lot of time trying to pick a suitable helmet to buy.
For Felix, who has a head circumference of about 45 cm, there was one safety helmet that was an obvious choice and so the only decision I had to make was which of the many styling options to choose.
If your child is slightly older, or simply has a larger head size than about 45-46 cm, you have another great option to consider.
So, here are my recommendations for the best safety helmets for toddlers.
I have one recommendation for toddlers with head sizes of less than 49 cm and another recommendation for those with head sizes of at least 49 cm but who are still too young for one of the heavier helmets that technically would fit, but would be uncomfortably heavy to wear.
Safety Helmets For 1 Year Olds (45 – 49 cm)
As I have already mentioned, Felix is a pretty physically advanced 1-year old boy who has a head circumference of about 45 cm.
He is already showing signs of wanting to ride his older siblings’ Micro Mini Scooters and he needs to find a good helmet to keep him safe.
After spending a couple of hours on the internet carrying out research, I decided to buy the Giro Scamp MIPS helmet in extra small size (45 – 49 cm).
In short, the reasons I chose this particular helmet (aside from the fact that there wasn’t much to choose from) were that it was the right size for his head, it had a “dial size adjustment” mechanism rather than inserts, it was lightweight, and it had very impressive safety features.

Safety Helmets For Toddlers with Larger Heads (49 cm+)
If your child’s head is already at least 47 cm, the extra small version of the Giro Scamp MIP helmet might not last along as you would want.
If they are already at 49 cm, you could buy the small version of the Giro Scamp MIPS, which is suitable for head sizes of between 49 and 53 cm, or you could choose the Baby Nutty helmet instead (see below).
Yes, there are other options to fit a head size of 49 to 53 cm, but many of them tend to be heavier than you would want. The reason that I recommend the Giro Scamp MIP (small) or the Baby Nutty products is that they are exceptionally lightweight and so more comfortable to wear.
They also both come with good adjustment systems to ensure a snug fit as your child’s head grows.

The Best Safety Helmet For Toddlers – My Verdict
If you are looking for the best safety helmet for toddlers, I would wholeheartedly recommend the Giro Scamp MIP helmet if your child’s head is below 47 cm.
I have not found any other high quality helmet that fits very small heads as well as the Giro Scamp MIP and I am clearly not the only parent who feels this way as these helmets get excellent user reviews from other parents too.
