The Problem
Edge Protectors for Babies are a must have product if you want to child-proof your home. I have them on various objects in my house and they have saved me many visits the hospital over the past 4 years!
Fireplaces, tables, kitchen worktops, shower steps all have one thing in common – they have hard and sharp edges just waiting to injure to your baby / toddler. Invariably it will be your child’s head that appears to be magnetically attracted to these hazards and they can suffer some very nasty cuts and bumps if these corners and edges are left exposed.
Foam Edge & Corner Guards
Fortunately, there is a fairly cheap and effective solution to this problem – foam edges and corner guards. Edge Protectors for babies and toddlers are absolutely essential if you want to make your home safe for them once they start to move around independently.
I have 4 year old twin boys and a 2 year old daughter – my house still has edge and corner guards strategically placed on the breakfast bar part of the kitchen worktop, the fireplaces, and the shower step. We could have used them on our solid glass coffee table too, but we decided that we would need to cover the whole thing in foam to make it safe and, therefore, it is now on long-loan to a relative.
We have tried a number of different types of corner guards, but only one manufacturer’s products have impressed me enough to recommend it to other families – the Prince Lionheart range.
They have a variety of different foam guards to cover the corners and edges within your home. Each product comes in a choice of chocolate brown or beige. There are some soft plastic transparent products on the market, but they were not soft enough and were more difficult to fit.
(1) Prince Lionheart Table Edge Guard with 4 Corners
I cannot speak highly enough about these.
You get a 12 foot length of edge guard and 4 corners. The foam used is fire-retardent, non-toxic and latex-free so you don’t have to worry about baby having the occasional nibble. They are very easy to install – you simply cut the strip to the appropriate length(s) and fix in place using the supplied double-sided adhesive tape.
Not only can you use them on square and rectangular tables, but they are also flexible enough to cover the single edge of a round or oval table.
(2) Prince Lionheart Jumbo Edge Guards
My boys love to run passed the protruding corner of our ugly breakfast bar and when they do occasionally catch their heads, it’s only their pride that’s dented rather than their heads! Seriously, without these edge guards we would have had regular visits to hospital.
Again, they are held in place using double-sided adhesive tape. Given the number of times that the boys have knocked them off with their heads, I have had to buy a roll of double-sided tape in order to re-fix them to the corners when the stickiness of the original tape wore off.
(3) Prince Lionheart Fireplace Guard
I have these fitted to the fireplace in the playroom.
The pack contains 5 x 18 inch sections and 2 corners. The straight edges can be trimmed to fit your particular fireplace.
(4) Prince Lionheart Jumbo Edge Guard (no corners)
This pack contains 4 x 18 inch straight sections.
Conclusion
Buy some Prince Lionheart edge protectors – they are well worth the money.
