The Good – Metal substructure and deep side wings for enhanced side impact protection; installed using rigid LATCH connectors for maximum security; Can be installed using the adult sealtbelt; Energy-absorbing foam layer throughout the entire seat; Recline for added comfort; Adjustable headrest to ensure correct shoulder belt strap position; Odor and bacteria resistant cover; Rated “Best Bet” in IIHS tests (high-backed mode).
The Bad – Quite Expensive (unless you choose the black fabric color).
The Bottom Line – The Clek Oobr Booster Seat is a high quality premium product that is both easy to use and manufactured with excellent safety features. I particularly like the metal substructure and generous side wings in the headrest and back section, that are said to provide enhanced side impact protection.
The Clek Oobr’s Best Features Examined
There are some great User Review and User Guide videos below, but I want to explain a few of its best features in a little more detail before you watch them.
#1 Elemental Safety System for 360-Degree Protection
The Clek Oobr boasts an elemental safety system that is said to greatly improve upon the normal side impact protection that one might expect in a booster seat.
But, what is this system and how does it work?
There are 5 parts to this safety system:
- Rigid LATCH connectors
- Magnesium metal backframe that shelters your child’s torso
- Headrest that is directly connected to the frame with strong steel posts (see image to the right)
- Deep padded side wings
- Energy-absorbing layer
These elements are said to combine to give your child a better chance of escaping serious injury in the event of a side impact collision.
The side wings on the headrest also provide a nice soft place for your child to lay their head when they are tired or sleeping – certainly much more comfortable than resting against the window of the vehicle.
You can learn more about the Elemental Safety System from this video:
There is no doubt that this elemental safety system is likely to give you as much peace of mind as one could possibly expect of a belt-positioning booster seat.
I particularly like the metal support structure that acts to prevent twisting and the padding that reduces the risk of your child’s head and body coming into contact with the hard parts of the vehicle interior in the event of a side impact collision.
You can see how to install & recline the Clek Oobr in these videos:
There are 2 very important safety considerations for you to remember when installing and/or reclining the Clek Oobr booster seat.
Firstly, if you are reclining the seat whilst installed using LATCH, you must ensure that the seat back or headrest is in contact with the rear seat of the vehicle.
Secondly, if you are installing the seat without using LATCH, you must not recline the seat at all.
#2 Reclining Seat Back and Adjustable Headrest
As you can see from the LATCH installation video above, reclining the seat back is a very quick and simple process.
You just put your hand under the front of the booster seats and pull backwards.
The headrest is easy to adjust and the bottom of it needs to be positioned just above the shoulders of your child. When it is correctly adjusted, the seatbelt can be very simply threaded through the positioning guides to ensure a proper belt placement across your child’s chest.
One of the big problems with booster seats that do not some with this feature is that the shoulder strap part of the seat belt can get into unsafe positions – either cutting across the neck or across the upper arm.
Watch User Reviews of the Clek Oobr
This “Petite Consumer” review covers all of the important safety, comfort and convenience features of the Clek Oobr.
This is another very useful user review from a mother of 4 boys – no surprise that she loves the moisture, stain and bacteria resistance of the seat fabric!
Clek Oobr Fabric Color Options
The Clek Oobr is a very sleek and stylish looking booster seat.
The standard fabric color options would be good enough for me and the price of the black version ($199) would be much too tempting to resist.
But, for those that want a funkier color scheme, Clek manufacture a number of “Paul Frank” options too.
Here are some of the seat colors:
