Narrowest Convertible Car Seats 2023 – Why?
The width of convertible car seats can vary enormously between different products. Generally, the higher quality premium convertible seats tend to be wider than the budget seats. The reason for this is that more expensive premium seats tend to come with enhanced side impact protection features, and those extra safety layers can make the seat more bulky than cheaper seats.
I have only considered high quality premium convertible car seats in this post because you shouldn’t have to compromise on your child’s safety and comfort in order to find a narrow seat that will fit easily within your vehicle.
For some people, the width of a convertible car seat will be irrelevant. If you are only ever going to have a single car seat installed within your vehicle, then you probably don’t need to worry about seat width. You can just make a decision solely based upon other factors.
If, however, you are one of the many people who are likely to need to fit multiple car seats side-by-side in a single row, whether that’s now or in the future, car seat width is a very important factor. It is important to consider your future needs and not just your current or short-term needs because the seats that I am going to recommend all have a useable lifespan of about 10 years. When choosing a convertible seat that can last 10 years or so, you need to consider the future and not just the present.
Also, it is important to remember to consider all parts of the seat when choosing the narrowest convertible car seat and not just look at the width of the seat base.
Although a narrow seat base is very important, that is not the only relevant consideration. If the seat is too wide at the top, you are still going to potentially have problems fitting it into your vehicle if you don’t have enough space for it.
So, which are the narrowest convertible car seats in 2023?
Narrowest Convertible Car Seats – 3 Options
The narrowest convertible car seats available in 2023 are not in fact just convertible car seats.
They start off life as a convertible car seat and can be used from birth (4 lbs) in the rear-facing position but, unlike standard convertible seats, they do not need to be replaced once your child reaches the height and/or weight limits for safely using the seat in that mode.
One really great thing about my recommended narrow convertible car seats is that, once those limits have been reached, the seats can then be transformed into harness to booster car seats, and then highbacked booster seats.
They are genuinely car seats that can be used from birth until your child no longer needs to sit in a car seat.
The narrowest convertible car seats available to buy in 2023 are the Diono Radian 3Q-Series seats.

Although there are some significant differences between these seats, and I highly recommend that you read my individual seat reviews or seat comparison reviews (links below), they are all just 17 inches wide.
To give you an idea of how that compares with one Diono’s main competitors, the Britax Boulevard ClickTight Convertible Seat is 18.5 inches wide. This might not sound like much, but it is when you are trying to fit 3 of them side-by-side or 2 seats plus an adult passenger along a single row.
Of course, one other benefit of the Diono Radian seats is that they can be used as harness to booster seats as well, whereas the Britax Convertible Seats are just that, and will need to be replaced at some point as your child grows.
