Finding the Best 3 Wheel Scooters for Kids is pretty easy in my opinion.
I have 4 kids under the age of 8 years of age and we have a garage full of 3 wheeled scooters. They are all made by the same company and they have all survived many years of hard riding and will probably keep going for many years to come. I have never had to repair or replace any of the components on these scooters and I can’t recommend them highly enough.
The Micro Scooter company has become one of the leading manufacturers of kids scooters in the world and their innovative 3 wheeled “lean to steer” mechanism has helped millions of young kids learn to scoot. This steering mechanism has proved so successful that it has now been widely copied by other companies eager to cash in on the success of the Micro Scooters.
There are in fact 2 different Micro scooters that I consider to be the best 3 wheeled scooters for kids on the market today and the only difference between them is that they are designed for use by kids of different ages.
The Micro Mini Scooter is suitable for toddlers aged 2 years and above and the Micro Maxi Scooter is best suited for kids aged about 5 years and upwards.
The Best 3 Wheel Scooter for Toddlers
As far as I’m concerned, the Micro Mini scooter is the best 3 wheel scooter for toddlers.
Before buying Micro Mini Scooters for my twin boys, they really struggled to learn how to use one of the cheaper alternatives that I had foolishly bought for them and it was so bad that they almost gave up trying. In the end, I bought them a couple of these Micro Mini Scooters and they were immediately able to scoot around without any problems at all.
Why Are the Micro Mini Scooters So Great?
The biggest problem with the other scooters that my kids tried was that they suffered from serious steering and balance problems.
Firstly, the 2-wheels were on the back rather than the front of the scooter and the steering mechanism functioned like a 2-wheeled scooter, in that they had to actually turn the handlebar like a bicycle. Due to the very small size of kids scooter wheels, it was so easy for them to turn the handlebar too much and oversteer massively.
Secondly, the 2-wheels were just too close together and this made balancing very difficult even when they were just trying to go in straight line.
So, when you add the steering problems to the balance issues you get … yep … kids falling off their scooters a lot!
The Micro Mini Scooters are totally different machines altogether.
The 2-wheels are at the front rather than the back and they are sensibly spaced wide apart so that the scooter is much more stable, even at high speeds.
But, most importantly, the unique “lean & steer” mechanism is what makes these 3-wheel scooters so great for toddlers. Rather than having to master the subtleties of a proper steering handle, they just gently lean in the direction that they want to turn and they turn with ease.
One other great thing about the Micro Mini Scooter is that its deck is of a size that seems to be prefect for small kids. It is narrow enough for them to be able to push off forcefully and get up some speed, but there is also enough space on the deck for them to be able to comfortably place both feet on the deck when they just want to cruise downhill a little.
Although I like to let my kids take some risks in life, I am a bit on the cautious side when it comes to health and safety issues. One of my main concerns when buying scooters for my young twins was how good the brakes would be. Pretty much all kick scooters come with a rear foot brake and sometimes there is just too much distance between the front of the scooter and the foot brake mechanism for small kids to use. Not so with the Micro Mini Scooters. The foot brake is well-positioned and very easy for small kids to operate safely.
The Micro Mini Scooter for 1-Year Olds
Even though the full Micro Mini Scooter is designed for use by toddlers who are aged about 2 years and upwards, you can actually buy a version that starts out with a seat and “O-Bar” handle, and then progresses through the stages until you end up with the standard scooter set up.
It is called the Micro Mini 3-in-1 kick scooter and is suitable for use from about 1 years and upwards.
Overall, I can’t speak highly enough about the Micro Mini scooters.
Really, there is absolutely nothing that I don’t like about them and other parents obviously agree, because the school yard and streets near our home are absolutely full of them. Yes, they are not the cheapest, but you really do get what you pay for in this case.
The Micro Mini Scooter is a Sturdy Machine
Not only do these scooters work really well, but they are also very sturdy and robust. My oldest kids have owned theirs for about 5 years and, apart from a few scratches and lots of dirt, they work as well as they did when I first bought them. I have never had to make any repairs or buy any replacement parts during that time. I have also never heard anyone complain about the build quality of these scooters and they continue to get excellent reviews.
Since they are so hard wearing, there is even a second-hand market for them. We could sell them on for about 25% of the full price after 5 years hard use, but instead we are just about to donate them to younger cousins who i’m sure will also get loads of use out of them for years to come.
It is easier to show them is use rather than describe them in any more detail, so here is a video of the Micro Mini Scooter in action …

The Best 3 Wheel Scooter for 5 year olds
Just as the Micro Mini Scooter is the best 3 wheel scooter for toddlers, the Micro Maxi is, in my opinion, the best 3 wheel scooter for kids aged about 5 years and older.
It is effectively just a larger version of the Micro Mini scooter and comes with all of the same features, just on a bigger scale. So, the handle bar extends to a height that is appropriate for taller kids and the deck is capable of supporting the weight of heavier children.
Although my twin boys graduated to the 2-wheel Micro Sprite scooter, my 5-year old daughter chose to upgrade to the 3-wheels of the Micro Maxi Scooter instead. The boys wanted to be a bit more aggressive and try a few tricks (and you really need 2 wheels for that), whilst she was happy to keep cruising around on 3-wheels for a little while longer.
She continues to ride it hard and it continues to work like new.
